Under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor a Microbiologist is responsible for performing and coordinating routine and complex analyses and procedures. This position will have the maximum responsibility level in General Microbiology, which will include accurate and detailed training of new technicians, data reporting duties as well as primary responsibility of special projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Prepare samples and perform routine and complex microbiological analyses

Knowledge of media preparation

Perform microbial identification and enumeration

Ability to coordinate daily tasks and special projects

Produce reliable and accurate reports

Ability to interact with clients in a professional and technical manner

Maintain instruments and equipment so that they are continuously in good working order

Provide a leadership role in quality program

Maintain a safe and clean laboratory environment

Ensure that SOPs, Standard Methods, and protocols are understood and followed

Provide training and technical support for technicians as directed by the Laboratory Manager

Work as a team with all staff to accomplish position and business objectives

Microbiologist must be able to describe, perform and train others on the following analysis:

Aerobic Plate CountYeast & Mold
Coliforms (MPN & Petrifilm)Lactic Acid Bacteria
AlicyclobacillusPsychrotophic Plate Count
E. coli - presumptive and confirmatory E. coli O157:H7 - presumptive and confirmatory
Salmonella - presumptive and confirmatoryListeria - presumptive and confirmatory
Bacillus cereus - presumptive and confirmatoryStaphylococcus aureus-presumptive and confirmatory
Aerobic & Anaerobic Spore TestingBacterial and Fungi Identification (via API Kits)
Pseudomonas spp. Plate count and IdentificationHeat Resistant Mold

Skills and Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty exceptionally. This position requires that the individual has the knowledge and experience base that would allow them to successfully train others on methods and procedures. Ideal candidate will work closely with Laboratory Manager to continuously improve quality of work. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education/Experience:
BS in Microbiology, Food Science or other related field. A minimum of 5 years experience in a food microbiology laboratory is essential to perform the required functions of the position.
