Position Title:Senior Process Engineer, Commercialization

Division:Sensory/ Product Dev.

Location: Livermore, CA

Reports to:Segment Leader Product & Process Development

 

The Process Development Technical Manager designs and leads complex process development consistent with the division strategic plan, oversees the technical operations of the area, and maintains and improves quality programs and capabilities of the process development group.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Design and lead complex process development projects that result in total customer and supervisor satisfaction and meets or exceed project economic performance criteria. Manage all aspects of projects from raw material procurement, equipment selection, set up and testing, developing processing procedures for equipment and food safety/quality requirements, and supporting manufacturing trials for commercialization.
Conduct sales for the Product & Process Development market segment in support of the segments financial objectives and strategic direction. This position has responsibility for communicating new opportunities, and working with members of The NFL staff to set-up and make sales calls and participate in sales programs (e.g., IFT meetings, etc.).
Interface with clients to develop project plans for studies, cost projects, and develop proposals based on those plans. Follow up on all proposals and cost estimates, and communicate results to the Segment Leader.
Manage the ongoing project management efforts of the process development group to meet or exceed customer needs.
Coordinate joint product and process development projects with the Technical Manager, Product Development including staffing, project costs, and quality of output.
Supervise staff affiliated with process development projects including 2 project leaders, 1 pilot plant supervisor, and 1 technician. Develop and maintain a strong team.
Manage the ongoing project priorities and workflow of the process development group. Identify scheduling conflicts and needs for temporary help and/or additional resources (e.g., staff, capital, etc.).
Maintain and improve the ongoing quality of output from process development.
Investigate new/existing technologies, which represent new capabilities/potential marketing opportunities.
Coordinate The NFL's pilot plant schedule and operations, including maintenance of the facility and equipment, and establishing and monitoring standard operating guidelines for the pilot plant operations to ensure high quality output.
Comply with applicable regulations to food processing, good manufacturing procedures, good laboratory practices, and safety. Understand FDA, USDA, EPA, OSHA, and State of California requirements for The NFL's food processing facility and file any required documentation for the pilot plant facility and/or for food samples produced in the facility.
Support the goals of The NFL, following established policies and procedures.
Travel as required to support sales calls, project work, and or production scale up.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, with excellent communication skills, quality oriented, able to multi-task, able to draw insightful, accurate interpretations from data and will possess excellent people skills.

Knowledge of: Process development of a wide variety of foods and beverages, food processing equipment operations including understanding the chemical microbiological and engineering effects of operations, thermal processing, packaging materials, sanitation procedures, project management, and experimental design.

Ability to: Develop and write complex experimental processing scenarios, use engineering tools and machinery, maintain safe and orderly work environment. Travel to support sales and project efforts, use computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Office programs, ACT Database, CalSoft or other data collection equipment, etc.); a valid drivers license.

Education/Experience Masters or Bachelors Degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or closely related field, with 7-10+ years experience, or a combination of education and experience demonstrating an ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
