The Pilot Plant Technologist is responsible for pilot plant operations including cleaning, sanitation, facility and equipment maintenance, new equipment installation, and project operations.  He/She will supervise activities of technicians assigned to pilot plant work and will identify, price, and develop justification for capital expenditures for the pilot plant.  He/She will maintain spare parts and supplies for use in the pilot plant.

Essential Functions:

Perform routine and non-routine procedures both independently and under the direction of a supervisor/project leader that result in supervisor/project leader satisfaction and meet or exceed client expectations.

Supervisor/project leader satisfaction

Reliable results (no repeat work, minimize equipment breakdowns).

On-time delivery of work, equipment ready when needed.

Appropriate communications with project leader and/or supervisor.

Assist with execution of projects conducted in the pilot plant.

Assist with receipt of products, ingredients, storage of samples, weighing
ingredients, preparing packaging, and shipping of samples/equipment to client.

Project Performance:
Supervise vendors, contractors, and/or technicians assigned to projects.


Meet or exceed project efficiency and budget targets.

Assist with execution of projects conducted in the pilot plant.

Assist with receipt of products, ingredients, storage of samples, weighing
ingredients, preparing packaging, and shipping of samples/equipment to client.

Assist with materials handling, process equipment operation, and forklift
operation.

Maintain and improve the pilot plant capabilities
Maintain a safe and orderly work environment

Maintain the pilot plant in a condition that meets cGMP regulations and provides asanitary environment for producing food products

Maintain the equipment and facilities of the pilot plant including the hardware,plumbing, electrical facilities, supplies, and spare parts

Provide Innovation Division support through equipment and facilities upgrades andfabrication requiring skills such as machining, welding, and other techniques as required

Assist with training one or more full-time or temporary technicians to assist with project work and operation and maintenance of the pilot plant.  Training may also extend to other division staff as needed to support project work.

Maintain appropriate communication with staff and clients following The NFL’scommunication policy.

Maintain the quality programs of the division

Follow/write/revise appropriate SOP’s and protocols to assure quality
performance of division projects and facilities with input from Technical Manager.

Maintain laboratory and experimental records in accordance with cGMP, BTA,
and GLP requirements.

Maintain personnel record, including job description, curriculum vitae (CV), and
training records to meet GLP requirements, and Technical Manager approval.

As a member of the NFL team, cooperate with all staff members to maintain an open, professional working environment that is dedicated to providing superior customer service and employee satisfaction

Work as a team with all staff to accomplish position and business objectives

Provide a high level of customer responsiveness and interaction when customers
are on-site during pilot plant trials.

Position Requirements

Skills and Abilities

Requires effective oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to read and interpret common technical information such as operator manuals and standard operating procedures.

Knowledge of basic mechanical repair and maintenance of commonly used food processing equipment, and expertise in metal working, including basic fabrication, machining, and welding

Ability to define problems, collect data, evaluate mechanical equipment, identify the need for SOPs for new procedures, supervise and train technicians, operate computer and use word processing, spreadsheet and data gathering software.
Education/Experience

High school graduate or GED, one or more years of college or technical training preferred.  Knowledge and expertise in mechanical, plumbing, and electrical skills is required.  Food Manufacturing, Packaging, QA/QC experience would be a plus; training or experience in laboratory experimental techniques would be beneficial.

Experience in operation and maintenance of manufacturing/industrial equipment, or a combination of education and experience indicating an ability to perform the essential functions of the position.  A driver’s license and good driving record is required along with proof of insurance.
